Upper Room

The Great Cardiologist

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
HAVE you ever had a broken heart? Most of us have gone through an experience that has left us hurt, discouraged, and deflated. Sometimes we feel almost physical pain. For me this feeling came at the unexpected loss of my father several years ago. Amid the shock and >sadness of his passing, I felt an ache within that I had never experienced before.
Why should God care about our pain? Doesn't God have better things to do? The answer lies in God's deep and abiding love for us. First Peter says, "Cast all your anxiety on [God], because he cares for you" (5:7). God loved us enough to send Jesus. And Jesus wept at the death of Lazarus (John 11:35), probably not so much for Lazarus as for his family in their grief.
When our heart is broken and our spirit is crushed, God draws us close to comfort us. No heartache or sadness is beyond God's understanding or compassion. Now as I recall the years I had with my dad, I do so with the joy of fond memories and the godly example he set for me. The One who created our hearts can mend them when they break. That is heart surgery no earthly doctor can perform -- only God!
